The hands getting ready to reach into your pockets are getting numerous in Lake County.
Let's see, to start we have the Lakeland levy that will increase by 400%, Taxn' Trustee Chris Galloway's (& Trustee Chuck Klco's and Trustee Jeanette Crislip's) "safety" levy, and...that's right...the Willoughby Hills income tax increase--no wait credit--no wait tax legislation reform--income tax decrease for some, but not others....

Lakeland wants to "replace" the $11 per $100, 000 of valuation they get with...get this...a $44 per $100, 000 levy. Taxn' Trustee Chris Galloway, Trustee Chuck Klco and Trustee Crislip are trying to get Lake County Township residents to pay more for something they are legally entitled too: protection from The County Sherriff.
Last but not least, our friends in Willoughby Hills are at it again! After swinging and missing this past spring/winter the Willoughby Hills City Council and Mayor have started their campaign for a Willoughby Hills Income Tax ________.
At least this time Mayor Weger and Willoughby Hills City Council heeded our advice: work with the News-Herald...get the News-Herald to do stories on how you cut everything you could...then go after the money! Mayor Weger has not seen a tax increase he does not like. Weger has supported every tax increase that could affect Willoughby Hills.
Will Weger and City Council get their Willoughby Hills Income Tax ________ this time?
So sad.
Here's something funny: on June 23rd we tried to get Candidate Dave Fiebig to realize that he needs to pound Liberal Lorraine Fende on taxes...then comes June 24th...a Willoughby Hills Income Tax ______ being considered.

The important part to pay attention to is that the Lake County Township Association (no website) met and has discussed the idea of a "safety levy." The article then goes on to point out that Leroy Township Trustee Chuck Klo is pondering a 0.8 mil worth $24.50 per $100, 000 of valuation.

The Lake County Township Association and the News-Herald are clearly setting the stage for a well orchestrated "play" for more of your money.

OH-18: Who will (and won't) replace Tim Grendell this Fall
Sen. Tim Grendell (R, OH-18) is going to win May 4th's primary for the 98th House District Seat. Sen. Grendell will go onto to STOMP whatever "also ran" opposition that the Democrats sacrifice this fall.
That's easy enough.
Who will the Republican Senate Caucus replace Sen. Grendell to fill the rest of the term for which Grendel is currently serving?
Any ideas?
Let's digress for a moment.
We know what Democrats will seek to face the appointed repbulican: 1)"Liberal" Loraine Fende, AND 2)Dan "feed at the trough" Troy. We all know Loraine is terrible campaigner, even in her stomping grounds of Western Lake County. Also, Fende is unelectable in Geauga County; she is a loser outside of Western Lake County. Dan Troy will be the Democrats OH-18 Senate candidate.
Now, back to who the Senate Republican caucus will nominate.
Our guess? Judge Dianne Grendell.
Even though Trustee Chris Galloway is scheming and doing everything he can to maneuver and lobby for the appointment...it is not going to happen. Just like we said he would not really run for County Commissioner...he won't get the rest of the OH-18 term.

NAST NASTY NASTY! OHIO 11TH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS PRIMARY
The News-Herald has edited the linked story at least three times that we can tell; both Judge Eugen "Gene" Lucci and Judge Colleen O'toole have filed elections complaints against each other. You can read the details in the linked News-Herald Story.
Bottom line: these complaints are petty and a smoke screen meant to deter from the real issues.
The real issues are the candidates' 1) personal track record, and 2)professional track record. The order is not necessarily a reflection of the importance.
Both Judges have an extensive and well documented track record.

So far, Judge O'toole has taken the high road. According to well placed sources and observers Judge Lucci started the attack in early March with vicious letter claiming that Judge O'toole is overturned 78% of the time and that a coin flip would get cases right more often than her. That's politics I guess.
But, has Judge O'toole pointed out that Judge Lucci is considered to have some moral misgivings by many? Sources tell us that Judge Lucci left his wife for a Yoga instructor about half his age; we already reported this a few months ago, but in light of Judge Lucci's attacks we need to point it out again.
Who is behind the agressive campaign? Sources tells us Trustee Chris Galloway is running Judge's Lucci's campaign, that is, Chris Galloway's Red State Strategies political consulting firm.
Anyhow, there are plenty of issues to talk about.
How about Judge Lucci's ruling in favor of property owners' rights to their land between the natural high water mark on Lake Erie and the low water line. The News-Herald covered the fact that Ohio Supreme Court will take this issue up.
Let's get back to the issues of record here, like these rulings.

UPDATED: What is Chris Galloway Up To?
Dan Troy's recent Campaign Committee filing revealed that he has around $161, 000 on hand. Trustee Chris Galloway knows he does not have a chance of raising that kind of money. However, Galloway was reported to have pulled petitions, but has not filed.
Our guess is Galloway WILL NOT file petitions for County Commissioner.
So, what is Galloway up to?
A likely theory is Galloway signed out nominating petitions in order to float his name "out there" for some self serving reasons. What reason you ask? Well Well.
It seems that Galloway wants to keep the field of republican candidates clear. Galloway wants to keep the field clear so that he can leverage a "deal" out of Dan Troy to keep him (Galloway) out of the race.
Basically, Galloway is looking for a "payoff" to stay out of the race. An appointment? Some business thrown to Red State Strategies...what ever Galloway can get.
Updated thought: Chris Galloway lost the race for OH-62. Galloway was Former State Rep. Callender's legislative aide. Hmmm. Galloway could not win his old boss' seat (I know...it's really the people's...yeah yeah), against Lorraine Fende...yet, he thinks he can win county-wide? No...I don't think Trustee Galloway thinks he can win...let alone raise the six figures it will take to win. Our bet is still on Galloway hoping for some sort of "pay off" to stay out of the Commissioner's race...you don't think Dan Troy wants to work at getting elected do you?
Disclaimer: We are NOT insinuating some sort of illegal activity when we say pay off...merely...that a "better opportunity" would present itself to Galloway via Dan Troy.

Galloway Better Make-up his Mind and Get Busy...Even to be Competitive!
This fall Lake County Board of Commissioners President Dan Troy is up for re-election. The political chattering class tells us that Concord Trustee Chris Galloway is considering a run for County Commissioner; he has pulled petitions. What's with the delay in filing petitions...its not like your odds are improving.
Galloway better get serious if he is even to be competitive.
Simply put Dan Troy will raise big bucks. A lot of money. Tons of cash.
Case in point: Bob Aufuldish had around $196, 000 on hand in April 2008 when he defeated Ray Somich in the 11/2008 General Election. You can bet Dan Troy will raise even more money than that in order to defend his seat on the Board of Commissioners.
Let's say that Dan Troy ONLY raises 25 % more than Aufuldish. That puts Troy at $250, 000.
Galloway will come nowhere close to that amount.
Galloway and his RedStateStrategies has struggled. Galloway lost to Loraine Fende and has lost some key races for clients. Let's hope more thought goes into how Galloway will compensate for a big difference in campaign bank accounts than he put into when he decided to allow Lake East's Administration Building to be outside of the JEDD.
Good Luck Mr. Galloway, you are going to need it. Better get to work!

Petition filings: Let's Hope Dan Troy and Steve Latourette get some competition
We might see some competition in the Fall 2010 elections.
Concord Township Trustee Chris Galloway has pulled petitions at the Lake County Board of Elections to run for County Commissioner seat that expires in 2010 now held by Commissioner Dan Troy.
The US 14th Congressional race for this fall saw Deputy Chief of Staff Dino Disanto pull petitions for U.S. Rep. Steve Latourette. Couldn't Latourette even show up himself? Also pulling petitions were Paul Bailey and John Green, both Lake County residents.
We can only hope one of these guys has a lot of money and give Steve Latourette a serious competition; Latourette has been spending tax dollars like a kid in a candy store since being put on the House Appropriations Committee.
In the Ohio 62nd House district only Loraine Fende pulled petitions for the seat she holds.
Finally, Painseville Municipal Court Judge Michael A. Cicconetti pulled petitions to run for the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Let's hope Dan Troy and Steve Latourette are vigorously challenged!
