Thousands of angry New Jersey firefighters battling for their pensions unleashed a chorus of boos at Gov. Chris Christie during a convention in Wildwood yesterday, according to a report.
But Christie, who has proposed reducing pension payouts by 5 percent to firefighters who retire after 25 years, lashed back.
"If you guys think you can shout me down, it's going to be a long day," he said, according to The Press of Atlantic City.
Under Christie's proposal, firefighters would have to work an extra five years to get their full pension

Unfortunately for the citizens/taxpayers of NJ, public employee and construction trade unions have run the state for a long time during the administrations of Democrats and Republicans. Ditto for NY state. But finally, NJ has a governor with some cohones.
ReplyDeleteMore interesting news from Gov. Christie. On Thursday, Oct 7, He announced halt of construction (construction contracts were already let) of an $8.7 billion contract for a new NJ/NY Hudson River train tunnel. He made the prudent financial decision especially considering that the cost overruns would have been in the billions, but he will receive both bouquets and brickbats for his decision. For comparisons think Boston's Big Dig. Check out the story in today's NYT.
ReplyDeleteCheck out David Brooks column in today's NYT. It is a discussion of the canceled NJ tunnel and the author's take on why government can't afford large projects any longer. He points out that public employee pay and pension costs have dramatically decreased the money available for large projects.
